Hi, I’m Jamie, the photographer behind Capturing Candid Photography—a Tulsa-based wedding and portrait photographer. I’m known for being easygoing, helpful, and calm on wedding days, and one of the biggest things I do for my couples is help them navigate the unexpected with confidence and peace.

After photographing many weddings, I’ve noticed something important: so many couples put pressure on details that end up mattering far less than they expected.

So let’s talk about it.

What Doesn’t Matter As Much As You Think

1. Bouquet and Garter Toss

I’ll say it—these are becoming a thing of the past.

More and more couples are skipping them entirely, and honestly, no one misses them. If it doesn’t feel like you, don’t force it into your timeline. Your reception will still feel full and fun without it- your dj can guide you with this one if you need some help.

2. Wedding Favors

I’ve been to so many weddings that didn’t have favors… and guess what? No one noticed.

Favors can be cute, but they’re often left behind or forgotten. If you love the idea, go for it—but if you’re feeling pressure around it, this is an easy thing to let go of.

3. Perfectly Matching Bridesmaid Dresses

There is something so beautiful about a multi-colored or mixed-style bridal party.

When your bridesmaids feel comfortable and confident in what they’re wearing, it shows. The photos feel more natural, more elevated, and honestly—more timeless.

4. A Long First Dance

I’m seeing more couples choose to do just the first verse and chorus of their first dance, then smoothly transition into the next moment of the evening.

And it’s so good.

It keeps the energy up, avoids awkwardness, and still gives you that meaningful moment without dragging it out.

What Actually Matters (From Experience)

1. A Thoughtful, Flexible Timeline

Your timeline is one of the biggest factors in how your day feels.

We plan it intentionally ahead of time—but here’s the truth: it’s a guide, not a guarantee.

Things shift. Hair and makeup can run late. Transportation takes longer than expected.

What matters is having someone (hi, me 🙋🏻‍♀️) who can help you calmly adjust and keep things moving without stress. That’s where the real magic happens.

2. Doing a First Look (Especially for Downtown Weddings)

If you’re getting married in a busy or downtown location, a first look can completely change your day—in the best way.

It allows you to:

Get wedding party photos done before the ceremony

Knock out a large portion of portraits early

Enjoy more of your cocktail hour

Instead of feeling rushed after the ceremony, you get to actually be present.

3. Having Snacks While Getting Ready

This one is so overlooked—but so important.

A charcuterie board, light snacks, something easy to grab… it makes a huge difference in your mood, your energy, and honestly, your patience throughout the day.

No one feels their best running on caffeine and nerves alone.

4. A Prepared Details Box

This is one of the simplest ways to elevate your gallery.

Before your wedding day, gather:

Your invitation suite

Rings

Perfume

Jewelry

Shoes

Any meaningful heirlooms

And even your fiancé’s details (watch, cufflinks, etc.)

Have it all in one place, ready to go.

When I arrive, I can start styling and photographing everything right away—and I’ll always return it exactly where it belongs.

I have a more in-depth list for my clients ;)

What I Wish Every Bride Knew

Everything is going to work out.

Truly.

You can plan, organize, and prepare (and we will), but no wedding day goes exactly as planned—and that’s okay.

The timeline is there to serve you, not stress you out.

The most beautiful moments—the ones you’ll actually remember—aren’t the perfectly executed ones. They’re the real ones. The emotional ones. The in-between ones.

And when you’re surrounded by the right people and supported well, everything falls into place the way it’s meant to.

Final Thoughts

If you take anything from this, let it be this:

Focus less on checking every traditional box… and more on creating a day that feels like you.

The more relaxed, present, and supported you feel, the more your photos will reflect that—and that’s what truly lasts.
