Planning a wedding is exciting but can also feel overwhelming—especially when it comes to photos. You want your wedding pictures to be stunning, natural, and full of emotion, but the last thing you need is extra stress on your big day. As a wedding photographer, I’ve helped countless couples feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. Here are my top tips for ensuring your wedding photography experience is smooth, enjoyable, and results in breathtaking images you’ll cherish forever.

Choose a Photographer You Connect With

Your wedding photographer is with you for some of the most intimate and emotional moments of the day, so it’s important to choose someone you feel comfortable with. Look at their portfolio (multiple galleries so you’re confident in the end result), read reviews, and schedule a consultation to make sure their personality and style align with yours. A great connection with your photographer leads to more natural, joyful photos!

Plan a Timeline with Photography in Mind

A well-planned wedding day timeline ensures you have enough time for all the must-have shots without feeling rushed. Work with your photographer to schedule time for getting-ready photos, first looks (if you’re doing one), couple portraits, family formals, and reception moments. Buffer time is key—things rarely run exactly on schedule, and you’ll want to enjoy the day without worrying about the clock. I send my couples a wedding guide as well as a questionnaire to assist with this planning process.

Consider a First Look

A first look (seeing each other before the ceremony) is a great way to calm nerves and get beautiful, intimate portraits before the whirlwind of the day begins. It also allows more time for photos, meaning you can enjoy more of your cocktail hour with guests after the ceremony. If you want pictures enjoying cocktail hour with your guests, this is highly recommended.

Trust Your Photographer's Guidance

As a the Photographer, I know the best lighting, angles, and locations to make you look and feel amazing. Sometimes these moments may take trial and error, but we’ll get there in the allotted time. Trusting your photographer’s expertise allows you to be fully present and enjoy the moment, rather than worrying about how you look in every shot.

Embrace the Candid Moments

While posed photos are beautiful, some of the most treasured images come from genuine, unscripted moments—your partner wiping away a tear, laughter with your bridesmaids, or a spontaneous dance with your grandparents. Be yourself, and let your photographer capture the real emotions of your day. Just because the camera is pointed at you doesn’t mean you need to look at it!

Have an Engagement Session

An engagement session is like a practice run for your wedding day photos. It helps you get comfortable in front of the camera and builds a rapport with your photographer, making the wedding day feel even smoother. Plus, you’ll have gorgeous photos to use for save-the-dates, wedding websites, and social media!

Relax and Enjoy the Day

The best wedding photos come from couples who are genuinely having fun. Take deep breaths, focus on your partner, and soak in every moment. When you’re relaxed and present, your photos will reflect the joy and love of your day beautifully.
